Last year, I was honored to be chosen to help launch and review Anne Marie’s book: Walk This Way: Ethics and Sanctification Lessons for Kids. It was refreshing to read a ministry book that is practical, easy to use, and a lot of fun to read. You can read my full review of Walk This Way here. Her next book, What God is Doing is full of Biblical lessons all pointing to our need for a Savior and how God brought about His plan for the salvation of the world. I am excited to be a part of launching What God is Doing and want to help get this book into the hands of kid’s leaders, teachers, and parents all over the world. In the introduction, Anne Marie says, “This curriculum will help you: teach engaging Bible lessons kids can’t resist, create a fun teaching atmosphere that sparks the imagination of children, teach children Biblical truths that enhances their spiritual growth, and share the gospel and expand the Kingdom.” I believe this book can do all that and more.
Here’s what I loved about the book:
- Versatility of Lessons
You can use the lessons in the order they are written, or pick and choose the ones you like. The lessons are written in Biblical order beginning with the creation of the world and build up to the birth of Jesus. You can adapt the lessons to use with small or large groups and you can pull the object lessons out to supplement your current curriculum. I love that anyone can use this book to reach children for God.
Each lesson is laid out in sections: Background, Object Lesson, Bible Lesson, Life Application, and Comment Box. Sometimes the object lesson and the Bible lesson are combined, other times they are separate. Most of the curriculum I’ve encountered doesn’t include this much content. The sections make it easy to prepare by including a material list, Scripture focus, tips, and additional instructions. I love that she added a geography section to go along with each lesson, because geography is a big deal in the Old Testament.
At the end of each of the lessons, the author gives you a quick tip from their experience on how to make the lessons even better. It makes you feel like she’s right there with you. It’s a big plus to know that these lessons have been tested out with actual kids.
- Additional Resources
There are lots of additional free resources included with the book. At the end, there are additional resources on how to lead a child to Christ, coloring pages that go along with the lessons, and more. You can find more resources for the book here.
I enjoyed reading through all 26 of the lessons, but these were my favorites:
- Chapter 1: How did we get here?
- Chapter 3: Cain and Abel
- Chapter 8: Jacob and Esau
- Chapter 9: Jacob wrestles with God
- Chapter 11: The ten plagues
- Chapter 15: Joshua takes command
- Chapter 17: Samuel, the ark, and the Philistines
- Chapter 18: Anointing King David
- Chapter 25: The time between the testaments
